Guarding The Arc Key For Florida State Against Notre Dame

Mar 20, 2011 2:43 PM

Florida State will have their long-range defense tested by Notre Dame, which is 5th among tournament teams making 39.2 percent of its 3-pointers.

"Just stop the 3," forward Chris Singletonsaid. "If we stop the 3, we have a very good chance of winning."

Likewise, if the Irish can avoid long-range meltdowns that plagued their last two NCAA tournament losses, their first Sweet 16 bid since 2003 is in reach. Notre Dame missed 34 of 43 attempts from 3-point range in those two losses.

The Seminoles rank 12th in 3-point field-goal defense (30.1 percent).

Florida State, Notre Dame A Battle Of Contrasting Styles

Mar 19, 2011 3:01 PM

Notre Dame’s NCAA Tournament matchup with Florida State on Sunday comes with a straight-forward storyline.

The Irish, seeded second in the Southwest Region, rank as one of the nation’s most proficient offensive teams. Notre Dame shoots 39 percent from 3-point range alone, one of 18 teams in the country to connect at that clip.

The No. 10 seed Noles allow opponents to shoot 36 percent from the field, best in that department in the country.

“They’re going to challenge all that,” FSU coach Leonard Hamilton said Friday.

Notre Dame ranks third in offensive efficiency at 122.2 points scored per 100 possessions.

Meanwhile, Florida State surrenders just 86.4 pace adjusted points per game -- tied with Duke for the best mark in the country.

Seminoles Clicking Offensively Without Chris Singleton

Mar 11, 2011 10:24 AM

Offensively challenged Florida State has managed to avoid recently that kind of catastrophic offensive performances that stunted its growth earlier this season. The Seminoles haven't shot worse than 43 percent in any of their past eight games.

Florida State's ball movement and decision-making has also improved.

"The coaches, you've got to give them a lot of credit," senior guard Derwin Kitchen said. "Because they've been stressing ball movement and patience for the past I don't know how long. And it seems like it's finally starting to sink in.

"And we're starting to make shots now."

Some of the improvement came after junior forward Chris Singleton suffered a broken foot in a victory against Virginia on Feb. 12.

Some of the Seminoles' best offensive performances have occurred with Singleton out of the lineup.

FSU's Singleton Confident He Will Be Back From Injury This Season

Mar 10, 2011 11:02 AM

Chris Singleton is confident he will be able to return from a fracture in his foot this season.

“I’m confident but it’s not on me,” Singleton said on Wednesday during a phone interview from Greensboro, N.C., where the Seminoles begin play in the ACC Tournament on Friday night. “The final decision is on the coaches and the doctors and I understand that, because they’re looking out for me.

“And I’ve still got to look out for me. I’m not going to really rush my way onto the court.”

Singleton earned third-team All-ACC honors and was also named to the league’s all-defensive team. As a sophomore, he was the conference’s defensive player of the year.

FSU?s Chris Singleton Could Return For ACC Tourney

Mar 8, 2011 10:11 AM

Florida State is optimistic that Chris Florida Singleton will return this season from a foot injury.

"He's getting awful, awful close," coach Leonard Hamilton said. "I don't know whether he'll be ready for Friday but I don't know that he won't. He's awful close. [He has] been doing some noncontact stuff that looks very promising.

"He hasn't had any setbacks, hasn't had any pain."

Singleton leads Florida State in scoring (13.1) and rebounds (7.1). He broke his right foot in the win over Virginia on Feb. 12 and immediately had surgery.
